How to Waterproof Your Shoes

Choosing the right spray

Silicone-based sprays work well on canvas and fabric shoes, while wax-based or fluoropolymer sprays are better suited to leather and suede, as they don't leave a residue that dulls the material's natural texture.

Application technique

Clean the shoes first and let them fully dry before spraying — waterproofing over dirt or moisture traps both underneath the protective layer. Apply in a well-ventilated area, holding the can about 15 cm from the shoe, and use thin, even coats rather than one heavy application.

How long protection lasts

Most waterproofing sprays last 4-6 weeks of regular wear before reapplication is needed. Reapply before the monsoon season starts and again partway through if you're wearing the shoes daily in wet conditions.

A quick word on suede

Suede is especially prone to water stains, so always spray a fresh pair before the first wear, not after the first rain exposure — reactive treatment after staining rarely restores the original texture.
