Use shoe trees
Cedar shoe trees absorb moisture, control odor, and help shoes hold their shape between wears — especially important for leather formal shoes and boots, which can develop permanent creasing without them.
Keep them dry and ventilated
Avoid storing shoes in sealed plastic bags or boxes without ventilation — trapped moisture encourages mold and breaks down glue and leather over time. Breathable dust bags or open shelving work better than airtight containers.
Avoid direct sunlight and heat
Prolonged sun exposure fades and dries out leather, while heat sources (like storing shoes near a heater or car dashboard) can warp soles and crack materials. A cool, dry closet is ideal.
Rotate your collection
Wearing the same pair of shoes on consecutive days doesn't give them time to fully dry out and recover their shape. Rotating between at least two pairs extends the life of both significantly.
