Durability first
School shoes take a beating — playground time, daily walking, and general roughhousing. Look for reinforced toe caps and stitched (not just glued) soles, which hold up far longer under daily wear than cheaper glued construction.
Easy on, easy off
For younger kids, Velcro straps are far more practical than laces — they speed up the morning routine and reduce the risk of tripping on undone laces during the school day. Older kids can transition to laces once they're able to tie them independently.
Breathability matters
Shoes worn 6+ hours a day need breathable materials like canvas or mesh panels to prevent excessive sweating, which can lead to odor and fungal issues over time. Fully synthetic, non-breathable shoes are best avoided for daily school wear.
Support for growing feet
A firm heel counter (the part cupping the back of the foot) and a slightly stiffer sole than adult casual shoes help support proper foot development during a child's school years.
