Measure feet regularly
Children's feet can grow up to two sizes in a single year, especially under age 8. Measure both feet (they're often slightly different sizes) every 2-3 months by tracing their foot on paper and comparing it to a size chart, rather than relying on their last-known size.
How much growing room to leave
Leave about 1-1.2 cm (roughly a thumb's width) between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. Too much extra room causes the foot to slide inside the shoe, which can lead to blisters and affect balance; too little restricts natural growth.
Signs a shoe no longer fits
Watch for red marks on the skin after shoes come off, complaints of the shoe feeling "tight," visible pressure on the toe box, or your child changing their walking gait. Any of these signal it's time to size up, even if the shoe still looks new.
Shopping tips
Always measure and fit shoes at the end of the day when feet are slightly more swollen, and bring your child along for fitting whenever possible rather than guessing sizes online.
