General replacement timeline
As a rough guide, expect to replace shoes every 2-3 months for toddlers and preschoolers, and every 4-6 months for school-age children — though growth spurts vary widely from child to child.
Physical signs to watch for
Worn-down outsole tread, visible creasing across the toe box, or a heel that has started to lean to one side are all signs a shoe has reached the end of its useful life, regardless of size.
Behavioral signs
If your child starts removing their shoes frequently, complains during walks, or you notice a change in their gait, it's worth checking fit immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled check.
Hand-me-downs
Passing shoes between siblings is fine for lightly-worn pairs, but avoid it for shoes with significant sole wear — the compressed cushioning and uneven wear pattern shaped to the first child's gait can affect the second child's posture and comfort.
